Despite how cheesily some of the old movies were written, there's no disputing that Reeve was simply iconic in the role and the look was just right. Cavill is a little too short and his face and build doesn't look quite right. In comparison, Cavill looks like super-boy.

I think the biggest issue is charisma. Superman is supposed to be a "boyscout". He's supposed to be friendly with people and generally positive. People, in turn, like him.
Cavill is just too moody. I know they wanted to make a "grittier" film, and I'd agree the 80s Superman cheese just wouldn't do well. That doesn't mean that we need Cavill to scowl constantly. The constant grey/blue tones of the movie just felt off as well. Superman comics are vibrant.
There's actually been a few fan films that show what the Cavill movie look likes without all the grey/blue filters and it's a lot better looking.
