Yeah, I tried a VBD strategy last year and finished 4th in mine. Did you play PPR? I'm drafting 10th overall in my league, so the odds of drafting two stud RBs is pretty minimal, but I could easily grab two stud WRs. Our rosters are QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, W/R/T Flex, so getting 2-3 top-end WRs in the early rounds would be pretty huge.

It's a PPR league, my WRs & TEs and constant luck with RBs pretty much carried me all year.
