Coquitlam teen 'swatter' jailed, told to grow up
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/va...987/story.html
A provincial court judge urged a Coquitlam teen convicted of “swatting” and harassing people online across Canada and the U.S. to “re-engage with the real world” and grow up.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to nine counts of criminal harassment, eight counts of public mischief, four counts of extortion, one count of uttering threats and one breach of bail conditions.
He was sentenced on Thursday in provincial court in Port Coquitlam to a two-year custody and supervision order — 16 months in jail (minus credit for time served) and eight months under community supervision.
The teen found targets — who were gamers and predominantly female — for his harassment online. When they would not acknowledge friend and follow requests or send him photos he would attack them, their families and friends.
He flooded their social media accounts with spam, called and texted them at all hours, cancelled their utilities, posted their personal and financial information online and swatted them.
He was initially facing a total of 46 criminal charges.
