It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of David Jones via trade to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Jones was a great player for us last year, accumulating 26 points in 70 games last year in CPHL. He was thrust into the top line role of a severely handicapped Caps organization, and took great pride in that new role, showing flashes of brilliant leadership.
With Washington going through an extensive off season overhaul, GM JonDuke had his sights on another bottom 6 winger, and thought Jones would be made expendable. As much as he wanted to retain Jones to play injury back up, his $2 million cap hit was needed to put toward the player we're seeking, and the returning picks were a nice bonus to work towards the future.
GM JonDuke flew to the Jones summer residence in Guatemala to deliver the news in person to David. He was let go with no animosity or ill will, and we wish him the very best of luck in Tampa. David still has a very bright future ahead of him, and again, this was not an easy move, but a necessary one.
When I entered the league, Tampa was one of the first GMs to reach out and extend an offer of help. The talks for this transaction were easy peasy. Thanks droopydrew!
