I agree it would work a lot better for the Flames if they could overpay gio for this year and maybe next year, and then have his cap hit reduce once he's ~35 and we need the $$ for the young guys. Maybe a 20 year, $22 MM deal with a handshake for a $18MM/3 year deal after? That works out to $40MM over 5 years with a much friendlier cap structure to the Flames.

That's clear cap circumvention and would carry massive fines and penalties from the league, no doubt.
No NHL team would consider this.
