Could do a backroom deal where if his career is over he gets a "community ambassador" role for $20 MM over 4 years or something like that. Gio could make sure he gets the money by mentioning that if they don't pay it, every big RFA/UFA on the market gets a call from a former Flames captain explaining how they screwed him.

I agree it would work a lot better for the Flames if they could overpay gio for this year and maybe next year, and then have his cap hit reduce once he's ~35 and we need the $$ for the young guys. Maybe a 20 year, $22 MM deal with a handshake for a $18MM/3 year deal after? That works out to $40MM over 5 years with a much friendlier cap structure to the Flames.
