The thing is- Calgary seems to be the exception in Canada with respect to pedestrians. In Winnipeg we would J-walk across Portage ave (similar to MacLeod Trail) lane by lane. If somebody were to slow down, it messes with the timing and we'd have to go back.
People slowing down for j-walkers just serves to enable them, and encourage them to continue. It also can mess up the person trying to cross. I'm not saying to go ahead and hit them, but also don't cater to them.
