Brodie and Hamilton both in their prime years will be playing the top minutes for Calgary. 35 year old Giordano is playing second pairing and potentially making more than both of Calgary's top pairing guys.
That is a premium better spent on either a better top 6 supporting cast for Monahan/Bennett/gaudreau or on better depth defenders so Calgary can weather an injury or keep their top pairing fresh.
Not having a 7 million dollar second pairing guy like Brian Campbell is How Chicago can have guys like Hossa and sharp to augment their top guys.
That is the while problem with the Giordano extension; by the time this team is a serious contender, he will be a secondary contributor. However , if you want this team to be a serious contender quicker, trading Giordano is the most surefire way to do it.

Trading for Hamilton doesn't make Giordano expendable... It makes Wideman expendable. Even if Giordano is our #3 by the time we are really contending, what's the harm in him getting paid a little more than Brodie and Hamilton? Besides, Gio makes whatever defenseman partnered with him significantly better. And lastly, he's our freakin' captain and has been our best player when you look past his unfortunate injuries.
