- Four things to announce.
- Three areas wanted to address: Defense (Dougie Hamilton), RW (Michael Frolik), and Goaltending (Karri Ramo)
- Ramo stabilizes position, gives them options going forward
- Three capable goaltenders
- Signed Derek Grant - Can play forward position.
- Max Reinhart to Predators for conditional pick.
- Thanks to Max, wanted to give him an opportunity elsewhere.
- Conditional 4th round pick, won't mention conditions.
- Michael Frolik is like a swiss army knife. Can bounce all over lineup. Plays in the guts of the game. Strong penalty killer. Unheralded. Does a lot of heavy lifting. Doesn't get accolades. Important guy to help you win. Pretty/fancier things at the dance but he helps you win. Lots of responsibility placed on him, he earns coach's trust. Can do a lot of things that are very valuable. Probably won't score 30 goals but does a lot of heavy lifting in other areas that help you win games. Excellent team-mate. Great person. Brings energy.
- Gets on D-men, takes away time and space.
- Playing big doesn't mean being huge.
- Competes well in tight areas.
- Always looking at ways to get better. Very comfortable with the group of goaltenders they had.
- Need two goalies unless you have an absolute top flight goaltender.
- Will need a backup to 12-14 games at least just in terms of back to backs. Those are a huge 24-28 points.
- Don't envision carrying 3 goaltenders long term. Looking at options.
- Age of Frolik (27) is important if you are signing long term. Fits in the age group. Played a major part in the term of the contract.
- Lots of work to do. Need to get better. When you have a little bit of success helps your reputation externally. Showcases the franchise. Addition of Dougie Hamilton and how the defense sets up... players look at that. Players want to win. Need to have a good story - a good plan - to tell players.
- Flames didn't cast a big net... if Flames didn't sign Frolik they probably wouldn't have moved on to someone else.
- Hamilton and Frolik fit the positions the Flames are looking for, play the right kind of game, and help possession.
- Flames have lots of competition and it's a good thing.
- It's only July 1st, don't play a game for a long time. Still tweaking to do. Happy with the group they have. Opens up options and competition.
- Like that we have a lot of good players. A good blend of different things. Filled some needs. Not done by any means. Good competitive group and will have a good competitive training group.
- Want to be in a situation where more is expected. When you add a good player like Dougie, the expectation is the group will be better.
- Told the team that everyone has to be better (including Brad himself).
- Season we had WILL raise expectations. Can't shy away from it.
- If you want to be good you have to know you will have more pressure.
- There should be expectations.
- Derek Grant: Credit the scouts. Versatile, can play lots of positions. Intelligent. Will battle for an opportunity. Increases our depth. Scouts have wanted him for a long time.
- If we started tomorrow... let's go [we're ready].
- Continue to work but Brad is very happy.
- Helped ourselves at the draft and again today.
Done. Will be on Fan960 very shortly.
