It never would have been worth paying. Kessel has no work ethic, thinks offence all the time, is going to regress rapidly due to the fact he does not train in the off season, and even at a bit of salary retained is still a boat achor contract. Pittsburgh has put themselves in cap hell with the top end of their forwards and it will cost them big time when other teams destroy their bottom two lines.
