How so?
If Hamilton signed an offer sheet for the deal he eventually signed and Boston did not match, it would have been a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Flames essentially upgraded the 3rd pick to another 2nd rounder to remove the Bruins opportunity to match.
The upgraded pick also allowed them to perhaps sign Hamilton to a more reasonable cap hit as a $5.75 per deal was only slightly higher than what Boston was already offering and likely would have been matched. A much larger cap hit would have likely been needed to prevent Boston from matching.
