It is also very unlikely they start the season with this unresolved. They need to make the decision now and deal with the loss and start moving on, or sign him long term. As a trade chip he gets a good return right now, but not a great one. We're dealing one year of a top defenceman plus an inside track on signing him. That's likely not a whole lot more than a first from a contending team or a good but not great prospect unless we get lucky.

I think you are selling the potential return short. A backup goalie with 1 year to UFA got 2/3/7. Lucic got 2x1. How much would someone pay for a #1 defenseman? He puts TB over the top? Buys Chicago another Cup for Oduya money? Washington tops in the East with him? And so on.
