It's not that big of a cap hit.
8 years ago the cap was 50.3M
If it keeps rising at roughly the same rate, in 7-8 years the cap should be around 100 million.
6.85M is not really a huge percentage of that... it's comparable to a 4.9M cap hit right now... which is less than Wideman makes as basically a #4D(and probably #5 next year). At worst, Gio retires and we take some tiny recapture penalty that should be even smaller. Ideally Gio is still a productive Top 4 Dman, and by then that'll probably be #4 Dman money anyways. And if Gio is really the freak of nature he can be, he's still in Norris conversation then, like Lidstrom was at that age.
