You can do that for this season and look to move out Smid/Engelland/Wideman between now and the end of their contracts. Teams need legit NHL D-men all the time. Even if you have to eat 750K-1 mil of Smid/Engelland's contract to move them when the time comes, it won't be that big a deal.
We have more than 28 million tied up in movable, replaceable players (Smid/Engelland/Wideman/Hiller/Raymond/Jones/Stajan) and only Stajan's deal lasts more than this year and next. Raises will come from that pool.
