That's less than what Hamilton fetched, considering Sieloff likely has zero value at this point. If they retained $2m per, Kessel suddenly has a great contract and great value.
2016-1st+2016-2nd+Poirier+Gillies would be in the neighborhood methinks.
Not a great move unless you think the addition of Kessel will make it impossible to miss the playoffs (with 3 lottery picks, you can't gamble). As it stands right now (with Hamilton) I'd peg our chances at about 75%. With Kessel, we're probably nearly a lock. However, our PoHO was burned by playing the odds with Kessel before, you have to think he'd want to avoid history repeating itself. To be fair, even with Kessel in 2011, the Leafs were never likely to get in, but were even less likely to finish 29th.
It's a tough call, but I doubt BT is going to move the first next year after just dealing 15OA, and it would certainly need that included with any retention. Hamilton was our big player acquisition, I doubt we see a similar level of player brought in via trade for a year or two at least.
