Sorry for the conspiracy theorists discussing the players doing something like this, but the contract calls for the Employer (Kings) to pay for the services of the Employee (Richards) with guidelines laid out for what the employee is responsible to do. Just like any employee contract. If the employee doesn't meet all expectations for the minimum requirement in the contract (being in shape to perform the duties contracted) then the Employer can terminate the contract.
The team has done nothing to breach the contracted duties (pay the player to play hockey in the NHL), in their opinion the player has not done the minimum (being in shape). For what we know the meeting last summer laid out the minimums and Richards didn't do it, which caused the team to miss the buyout period.
