I think it stems from the fact that he has never been a starter in the NHL. Even in the AHL, he only had one season where he played more than half of the games.
Not a bad gamble for what the Oilers paid, but I wouldn't be setting expectations super high. Both Scrivens and Fasth put up great numbers as back-ups on good teams before going to Edmonton. You can't blame people for expecting more of the same.
