Don't get me wrong he has huge upside and his age is exactly what the Flames should be after. If Hamilton does turn out who isn't excited about a core of Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennet, Brodie, and Hamilton. If Gillies also sticks...that's a nicely balanced 19-24 group of players. I would have made the deal myself....I tend to be wrong on stuff like this.

This is fair, but when you look at what we gave up, the probabilities of the Flames getting an impact player are heavily in our favour.
And that's what Brad has done. He's playing the probabilities. He wanted one of the top three defencemen in this draft, but the price was too much. So he went for the next best thing, and could very possibly have landed a defenceman that is better than most of them.
And with that 15th pick, I think we would have picked Barzal or Connor. I love both of them, but they don't have that potential that Dougie has.
This is an objectively favourable trade for the Flames right now. It was the right move.
