Strong rumours in Edmonton that after the Oilers won the draft that either McDavid's camp or the NHL, or both, got a hold of Katz and said end the gong show. Some suggestion that McDavid's camp seriously questioned the direction of the team and it spurred change within the organization.

Remember, since winning the lottery the Oilers have canned their GM, their scouts, officially hired their coach, and turned their off ice game around.

That absurd gesture could well have been a planned gesture by the McDavid camp to alleviate any concerns with the organization and what is done to make it legitimate (and run like a pro sports team instead of a neighbourhood intramural club).

To me, this legitimizes the rumours that McDavid's camp had serious concerns and let the Oilers ownership know as soon as they won the lottery.
