I don't agree with trading Hamilton either, but the line of thinking could be that getting the third overall pick and selecting Hanifin would theoretically replace the loss of Hamilton, and give them an inexpensive cost-controlled player for the next 3 years. Upon that contract expiring, the likes of Lucic, Chara, Eriksson, Marchand, Kelly and Seidenberg will have expired(or have been traded), allowing them to breathe again. In the meantime, they'll have most likely at least $4m to spend on roster improvements on top of whatever they clear to try and remain competitive if they wish.
