So long as X + Y exceeds the cost of Talbot then it works... bit of a gamble though.

Do you not think it's barbaric that Jonas Hiller who is a known commodity, with a far more extensive track record, costs less than a man who was a journeyman goaltender outside of the past 34 games? Hiller's contract isn't unreasonable, and he's only got a year remaining, so I would find it difficult to believe that would account for the gulf in their asking price.
Why not save ourselves the second rounders, trade Hiller if they're not comfortable with him for more assets, and pay a goalie to be a stop-gap with Ortio next year? The mantra has been "we're still rebuilding" which is all well and good, but if you go out and give up two valuable assets for an older, replacement level netminder, Treliving and Burke are being a tad disingenuous.
In 3 years from now, when all of our young players are either getting paid, or about to get paid, it will be these second round picks that are hopefully ready to step into the lineup, and replace the older depth guys that we can't afford to keep, and provide the production needed to propel us on a deep run in the playoffs. This to me will show a lot about just how serious they are about sticking to the rebuild mantra.
