You win by paying guys for what they are going to do, not what they've done. There is a reason you can't build winners with UFA's - only one guy (Chara) has been worth the money. An 8 million Giordano for 5+ years starting at age 33 is (far more likely than not, given human physiology) not a good idea for this team. Sure, he "deserves" it and he would get it as UFA, but that doesn't mean we have to pay it.
