I really don't see how it's possible in today's game to devote that much capspace to a likely second or third pairing player at that point.

The cap is $71.4M. The max contract amount allowable under the CBA is now $14.28M. Star players are seeing cap hits of over $10M starting next season. This is just the reality of the economics of the league.
And also, Giordano isn't being paid 8 or 9 million dollars yet.
