In 6 years he wont be worth a 7 million cap hit, but the cap will probably be ~85 million so not crippling.

The new CBA prevents any single year of a contract being worth less than 50% of the highest year in the contract. Salary can also only vary by 35% from one season to the next. If Giordano earns $10M in any season of this extension, his salary cannot go below $5M in any other season.
You could go 9/9/9/7/6/5.5/4.5 to do $50M over 7 seasons.
Your example is also $40M over 6 years, not $50M over 7.
