After that season it was widely opined on CP that Wideman was untradeable and had one of the worst contracts in Flames history. Gio was definitely not overpaid at 4M in 2012-13
for the 2014 Olympic team he was talked about as a possibility if there were injuries... He was behind Jay Bouwmeester who had just extended with the Blues at 5.4 M Gio's 4 million in 2013-14 might have been 500k light but not enough to call it a huge bargain for the Flames.
Gio was underpaid last season 2014-15 but prior to his play last year nobody had him in the list of top 10 d-men in the league.

I would take that with some context in mind. the shortened season you still had a lot of guys from the previous regime(s) lingering around. The flames were not a good team. different dynamic/different time.
Since then Gio has emerged as 'the guy' on and off the ice. if he were 3 years younger, 9 per is a lot easier to swallow. Gio-Brodie are an elite tandem, and that shouldn't change over the short term.
Gio is an important piece, personally I see them settling in the 8-8.5 range for the first few years of the deal, and maybe it is only a 3 year 24-27 million dollar deal, but he's earned it and he's worth it to this team.
If it is 9 for the short term, I won't be complaining. Further, it sends a message to the league that the Flames aren't afraid to reward their players.
