why does this surprise anyone. 32 teams is the holy number for bracket playoff leagues.
1 in every 2 teams makes the playoffs, 1 in every 4 makes the second round 1 in every 8 makes the third and 1 in every 16 makes the final. it's perfectly balanced. No reason to think the NHL wouldn't pursue this.
