Fact is, he's 27, puts up possession numbers like a top 3 dmen but only gets the ice time of a #7. If he gets the ice time his possession numbers suggest he should, his points will increase.
In my opinion with younger players long term deals are better, as the cap goes up their contracts shrink relative to the cap total.

It just seems to me that you're arguing from the perspective of an agent and not taking into consideration what his market value actually is.
If Schlemko can get a twelve million dollar contract in free agency, let another team do it. You simply don't give that money and term to bottom pairing defenceman.
