Big pass. One of the most overrated players in the league, even now. After 9 years in the league, he still has only had one 50 point season. (and just barely). I get that he's great defensively but at $6m per for the better part of a decade remaining, you better bring more than that. He's basically a bigger version of Backlund at this point, who is also great at faceoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'd love that on the team at this point, but the acquisition cost would be insane IMO. I feel that they would ask for a return befitting a true 1st line player given the how much they overpaid when acquiring him in the first place. Honestly, I feel like if his name was John Smith he'd be making about 2/3 what he makes now on a much, much shorter term.. and with a lot less fanfare and hype.
He's a dynamite 3rd line center who would look great on our team, but for the reasons outlined above, I don't think it would ever work. I would think differently if we were the ones signing him to that deal for free (in terms of trading assets for him) but combine his existing contract with what Carolina would want for him and it's just impossible. Too bad, he could've been a great Flame, he's just the type of player we're missing.
