If the draft is a crap shoot, and NHL GMs know their stuff, why don't they ever trade high picks? Fact is, it's extremely rare any year for a pick in the top 5 to be traded. We can all debate about what is or isn't overpayment for a 5th overall pick. But the only way to determine the value of something is when it's actually sold. Since top 5 or to 10 picks are so rarely sold, it's clear they're valued very, very highly by NHL GMs - higher, in fact, than they are by fans on forums.
