The one thing that always drove me crazy about what is the legends EU is that after order 66 and the great Jedi hunt, they kept having Jedi pop up.
To me it weakens the story of Palpatine and the rise of the Empire and the revenge of the Sith.
Sure there could be Jedi out there, but they should either be running for their lives, or had dropped the lightsabres and gone into hiding.
To me the logical end of Star Wars Rebels is the death of Kanaan, and Ashoka, and Ezra fleeing for his life.
The logic of two Jedi being left makes sense, Yoda atoning in isolation for a 1000 years of Jedi arrogance, and Kenobi scanning the skies every morning praying that he doesn't see the arrival of a Star Destroyer, but always ready to grab young Luke and flee.
So having a Jedi show up in the battle for the death star plans would really piss me off.
As for the concept of the movie itself, I love the idea of a Star Wars version of the Big Red One movie. Where you have a desperate battle between outnumbered and badly equipt rebels and the Storm Trooper Corp. Fighting in rough terrain, you could even focus it on a squad level. I would love to have them give some personal attention to Storm Troopers as well, maybe they're being led by a older scarred clone, nearly the last of his kind and the final like between the New Order and the Republic.
You could even rip things off from the real life British Commando raid at Dieppe, where the Rebels are throwing away their lives so that the Commando's can sneak in and steal the plans, its a last desparate throw of the dice by a Rebellion that's not doing to well.
Hell I wouldn't even want Vader in this film, and I would only want a cameo by Tarkin and the Emperor.
I think it has the potential to be a completely different type of Star Wars.
They tried to do en masse battles on Geonosis and Hoth and Endor. But those battles seemed almost sterile. On Geonosis they were killing droids and bugs and clone troopers. On Hoth you knew who was going to win and it was too overwhelming. On Endor it had freaking Teddy Bears.
