What the Wings are doing with Mantha isn't the best thing to do when you look at both sides of the party. Mantha may never get that opportunity anymore with a new team with the red flags Detroit management is saying, and Detroit management isn't going to get a great return for Mantha.

However, by March 2015, it's safe to say the entire hockey world (except the geniuses in Vancouver) were well aware of Sven's deficiencies and impending waiver eligibility. I don't think Burke's comments from 1.5 years ago influenced this perception at all, I think it's fair to say other teams just don't like him much at this point/see him as a good NHL player. I bet Treliving was trying to trade him for sometime before the deadline, but no one really wanted him. Eventually he reluctantly traded him to a rival because no one else was dumb enough to match their offer.
