Green is all but assured gone, Orpik was surprisingly good but his best years are behind him, that leaves Niskanen, Carlson and Alzner as your top 3 which is pretty solid, but take Alzner out and it's very thin. They do have Bowey coming up who looks promising, but you can't throw a rookie defender into a top four role.
Hudler is ideal trade bait for a team like Washington, who could use a boost in secondary scoring to push them over the edge to being an contender. They are trying to win now. Only one year left at $4M so it doesn't handcuff them long term. Productive, fairly young still, can work wonders on PP. Has won before and developed in a winning culture. He'd be a great fit there and it looks like they have quite a bit of cap space. They even have some middle six RW that are UFA that Hudler would be a huge upgrade on and he could immediately step into the depth chart.
I really don't think they're in a position where they can be trading top 4 defense for more offense. Backstrom and Ovi will continue to be the main horses, Burakovsky and Kuznetsov are up and coming studs who should be able to provide good secondary scoring, and then you have guys like Johansson, Ward, Brouwer. Getting Hudler isn't a need for them IMO.
I know Alzner is a prized asset but you have to give up something significant if you're going to trade for a top ten point producing top line RW. Alzner is exactly what the Flames need, a steady #3 two way defenceman who can skate, and that would put our back end as one of the best in the league if not the best. It'd be even better if we could get Carlson but that may be a pipe dream...

He's exactly what the Flames need yes, but in that same breath he's just what the Caps need, so why give him up? Hudler's great, but it's just not a fit.

No, he's not worth that much. I appreciate the tone though.

And then adding in Wilson along with it, no chance. He's their Ferland, but with more potential and further along.
The best spot for him would be a place that's desperate for offense, or if we're on the outside looking in at the trade deadline. IMO
