There’s outrage and disappointment at the government for keeping flags at provincial buildings in Calgary at full-staff, following the death of Edmonton Cst. Daniel Woodall.
One former police officer, who can’t be identified because of his position, tells 660News he first noticed the issue at the Calgary Courthouse and went over to talk to sheriffs Wednesday about lowering them.
He said those inside complied with the request, but he was shocked when they were raised again less than an hour later.
“A policeman was killed in the line of duty, essentially serving a court document, it seems reasonable to expect the flags would be lowered to half-mast across the building and at all provincial buildings,” he said. “To me, it’s incredibly disrespectful that someone would commit a deliberate act to raise the flags back up again after they had been lowered.”
“I think it speaks to respect, or a lack of respect for the member who lost his life in the line of duty,” he added. “This was about as tragic an event as you can imagine.”

Alberta Justice referred to the Protocol Office who issued the following statement, via the Public Affairs Bureau.
“The province has a policy that provides general guidance on when to lower flags to half mast, with room for the Premier to use her discretion to address specific circumstances. In the case of Const. Woodall’s death, the decision was made to lower flags at the Legislature and all provincial buildings in the city of Edmonton, plus at all provincial correctional facilities in the province (where the majority of staff are law enforcement). Flags at all other provincial buildings outside Edmonton remain at full mast. This is consistent with what happened when St. Albert Const. Wynn was killed in the line of duty in January. In that case, flags were lowered at the Legislature and all provincial buildings in St. Albert, plus all provincial correctional facilities.”
