It is about how it was handled. Management would have been roasted by fans if they had forced Iginla to sign a formal agreement on teams he would waive for. They asked him - and he provided a list - a list that he then changed.
He really put the Flames in a spot because if Pitt had learned his "list" was a "list" of one team - they could have taken their 1st off the table. I'm convinced that's why they pulled the trigger to get what they could that night.

And if Pittsburgh did that, Calgary rejects the trade and Iginla would have gone to Boston without question. I get that some people are bitter that we didn't get Bartkowski, but FFS man, it was pretty clear in the end that while Pittsburgh was clearly Iginla's first choice, he would have accepted a trade to the other teams on his list if the Flames and Pens couldn't work out a deal.
