Norman Walter Raddatz was a “deadbeat,” his neighbour says, a man who piled dog feces on his fence to provoke a reaction.

Raddatz, 42, fired over 50 bullets from inside his southwest Edmonton home on Monday night, police say, killing Const. Daniel Woodall and wounding Sgt. Jason Harley. After the shooting, flames engulfed the Ormsby neighbourhood home, burning the house to the ground. A body believed to be that of Raddatz was found in the basement.

Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said officers arrived at 18620 — 62A Avenue to serve a warrant against Raddatz, following a case of “extreme” criminal harassment, a case of online hatred and bullying of an Edmonton family that dated back to February 2014.

Raddatz was a refrigeration mechanic, Colton said, but he hadn’t seen him leave his house, apart from going to get beer. Before the confrontation, a plainsclothes Woodall approached Colton to ask if his neighbour was a hunter. Colton told the officer he didn’t know.

Ollie Noble, who lived across from Raddatz for a longer period, said her neighbour always tried to cause problems.

“He was kind of distant,” said Ollie Noble, whose home was hit by multiple bullets. “He was just an oddball.
