Although if there were no ego's and BS in Baseball I would maybe not look at Bautista as the better #2 option because he has the high on base number but less power this year. Donaldson should be hitting 4th.
To me the top 3 spots the focus should be on the OBP. I agree that the speed can be a waste because stealing bases potentially takes the bat out of the hands of the guys in your lineup who can best cause damage. But as you get down to 4-5, my personal feeling is that the batting average should start to factor in a bit more. A bases loaded walk doesn't count two runs like a bases loaded single, or three or more like an extra base hit can. So Donaldson who's a good OBP guy, but has a higher average and slugging is suited to hit 4th. Bautista who's slugging is down this year and low batting average, but has a good OBP, is better suited to that 2 spot.
I wonder what the reaction would be to see an order like:
Carrera
Bautista
Martin
Donaldson
Collabello
Travis
Smoak
Encarnacion
Reyes
I imagine some would lose their minds.
