You can't really extend the years, owning a players rights for 5 (plus one past senior year) years seems like too much.
It would be amazing if they could sign contracts during school years, but the NCAA would never allow that. Would delaying the signing bonus for College guys get around that? Probably not.

I think you've touched on the solution. NCAA prospects should be allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with their parent NHL club. It would mean they get a guaranteed payday after they graduate, but it wouldn't violate NCAA regulations whilst they're still in the college system.
