My daughter needed pitch black. Her room never had a single light in it, we even put black out curtains up for her. Any little bit of light and it was game over. She is still the same at 11 yrs old. Even now if her room is dark she will sleep even if not totally tired.
The boy it didn't (and at 9 yrs old still doesn't) matter about light. If he is tired he sleeps, if he isn't he won't.
Kind of a trial and error thing TBH.
