I dunno about you guys with the fancy explanations, but I use the bags to keep things from rolling around.

If I buy large or single items (ie: An onion, or cucumber or squash), I don't bag (Caveat: Wet things like celery, lettuce etc get a bag because I don't want the rest of my groceries wet and early molding, but those plastic wrapped iceberg lettuces don't). Usually, I buy in pounds and kilos, so about 4-12 objects. I have no idea how pissed off a cashier would be to receive 2 pounds of Apples unbagged on a conveyor belt. I'm pretty sure I'd be pissed off figuring out how to load a plastic bag of a mishmash of apples, oranges, onions, and tomatoes into a fridge or look in a mishmash of produce to find what I need when cooking.
But hey, I think I'm benefiting from the hygiene aspect too!
