Heck, sign a weaker player, but still consistent, to a short term (1-2 year) but $$$$ contract and then use him as trade bait, or if we are playing well, his contract comes off the books when cap issues become an issue for us... if my understanding is correct.
This is probably much easier said then done.

The good UFA's just don't sign 2 year contracts for big money. They want term and security. Especially if Calgary is building a nice team they would want to be a part of it. Not come in then get shipped out.
