Dorothy was always more popular as a girl's name, but basically disappeared as a boy's name by the 1950s. I'm actually surprised at how quickly it dropped off as a girl's name in the 30s and 40s. You'd think there would have been a surge of popularity after the Wizard of Oz came out in 1939, but that actually seemed to kill it.
