Our scouts all have players they will be raving about. Like Hickey last year or Poirier before that. The scouts always have a beat on a player we've probably never heard of who is going to break out next year or the year after. When we drafted Hickey I was dissapointed because there were a few american dmen I was more familiar with and would have prefered at that spot. But after I looked at the scouting profile on him and saw him play a few games at BU, also reading what the coach and other players say about him it really made me gain confidence in our scouting.

We drafted a fairly unknown fast defencemen from the AJHL who ends up having a fantastic freshman season at BU and builds a nice name for himself as an up and coming prospect.

I'd rather draft a few more Hickeys and smiths in the 2nd/3rd/4th than trading up or moving picks out for roster players.

I think the draft is like a calculated gamble which can pay off depending on your scouts and how much you trust them.

Imagine we didnt take Johnny with the 4th that year, or didnt listen to the russian scout about Rushan Rafikov, whose game has come on leaps and bounds since we took him in the 7th round, represents Russia regularly and looked good in the subway super series.

I want us to keep doing that. Trusting our scouting team and being patient.
I believe that was Igor Kravchuk, who isn't actually a scout for us, but just had a convo with Conroy and brought up Rafikov as someone we should be looking at.
