Because it is AB Trans procedure to post the limit 10 below the design speed. A new set of
rules introduced in 1995 dictate current speed limits on new roads. Deerfoot has been grandfathered in at 100 becuase it miserably fails the current standards on multiple counts... Memorial, Calf's Robe, etc.
Citing Deerfoot Trail in argument regarding higher limits is PURE insanity. This is one of the most lethal roads in the country and you want to up the limit? One has a pretty good chance of dying on Deerfoot Trail so in my opinion, let's teach people to drive in such a way that they stay alive at the current limit, then talk about raising them.
Are the new rules overly conservative somewhere like Stoney? Yeah. Deerfoot? No. But before we do any of that? We need to start enforcing lane discipline, following too closely, vehicle equipment, etc... these are the things that will stop fatalities from skyrocketing if we start jacking up limits.
"What cars can safely do these days" isn't what's holding us back.
