Spent most of the weekend tearing out my old deck. I now want to punch the previous owner in the head. Ground level deck (~14" off grade) with all of the beams and joists just set on the ground. And not a single bit of treated wood in sight. One upside of everything being completely rotten is it is tearing down quick. 2x10s on edge for joists, completely rotted from top to bottom. It's a wonder I didn't kill anyone.
All the grade needs to be fixed to slope away from the house (novel idea) then I'll figure out footings.
People who half ass things drive me nuts. It doesn't take much more time or money to build things the right way.
