Obviously the group is promoting free speech. I'm all for that. I just take issue with the $10,000 prize and the effect it may have had on folks who aren't really up to speed on what's going on in the world.
I am the least artistic person on the face of the planet, so the threat certainly hasn't impacted me. However, if I were in the Dallas area and a kick ass cartoonist I would have been concerned about security before jumping in for sure. What I am saying is if you aren't aware of the Islamofascist disdain for drawings of Mohammed you might not even consider security for an event in which you stand to win $10K.

Actually, I wouldn't call it reaching. I get what you are saying. I guess it comes down to if you believe the group hosting it was knowingly putting people in harms way for their own benefit. 'For their own benefit' being the key qualifer. Which they may have been considering their MO.
Still, I like the idea.
