It's not even about money in most cases, as one poster noted. Its about volunteering your own time and getting noticed. Answering questions and generally just being a down-to-earth person. Show people that you are voting for an actual person and they may be more inclined to cast that ballot on election day.

A school colleague of mine is running federally for a party in town. This party hasn't had an MP in Calgary for as long as I can remember. Doesn't stop him. He has been meeting people for coffee every chance he gets. To hear from them and also to have them hear from him. That is commitment, and if i was in his riding, I would probably vote for him despite our different party affiliations.
While i understand this sentiment, I don't think you realize how big these riding's are, or how long it takes to cover them. Until I was involved with this campaign, I didn't realize this either and had a similar stance, but being out after work 2 days and week and every weekend (and knowing the candidate was out even more than that) since getting the riding nomination 2 weeks before the election was called until yesterday, we had no chance to cover the whole riding. Between debates, forums with community groups, door knocking and standing on streets trying to meet people, there are only so many hours in the day. The more people you have the more area you can cover, and like it or not, the more money your campaign has, the more people you can get.

I don't blame anyone for wanting to vote for the people who were able to make it by their house, but I do think it's unfair to say that those who weren't there aren't working hard, and aren't putting a ton of their time into the campaign.
