You're probably looking at the 18 piece plus fries at that price range. Tack on the gravy (KFC is almost inedible without it) and drinks as extras...
KFC is cheaper than it has been in the past, but the size of the chicken pieces has definitely shrunk. The drum sticks are tiny. The wings/thighs are mostly bones.
The price of a Big Mac meal including fries and drink is about $8. There really aren't many places offering a non-value style meal for that. The reality of the situation is that the cost of materials and labour has gone up considerably.
Places like 5 guys are going to be almost double the price after the cost of a drink is factored in.
