AFAIK, your wireless adapter/bios have to support WOWLan, otherwise you are out of luck. No combination of registry keys and magic packets will help you. Find this out first. If you are running PLEX, you really should just build a dedicated, wired, media PC with access to a large amount of NAS storage to be your PLEX server.

Laptops use almost no energy and run extremely cool if clocked down in the right power-saving mode. The only thing that would have a decreased lifespan are the fans in your laptop.
