The San Francisco Giants were in a similar situation in 2010 with Buster Posey. They chose to use (I hate the word burn in this situation) a year of his contract in 2010, meaning he'd be a free agent one year early. The reward for that? He's won three World Series title, the NL rookie of the year and an NL MVP trophy. What happened to Posey's contract? Well, the Giants gave him the richest deal in their history by signing him to a 9 year, $164M deal.
When your biggest problem is your star player needs to be rewarded, you're doing fine.
