Access Laptop Remotely
Hey CP-techies,
I need some help on something I am hoping to have set up. I have been reading all over the internet and just go in circles.
I will try to make this as clear and concise as possible.
END GAME WANTS:
- I would like to be able to be in my TV room in the basement and wake up my laptop (from sleep mode) in order to use PLEX.
- I would also like, though not AS important, to be able to use a TeamViewer type service on my phone to wake up my laptop while I am at work and then log in. Currently it can't connect if computer is asleep.
EQUIPMENT:
- Brand new fancy Dell laptop for personal use
- Windows 8.1
- Apple Airport Extreme router
THINGS I HAVE READ ABOUT
- Apparently Wake On LAN used to require a wired connection, but I gather Wireless Wake On LAN has been advancing. My laptop is connected wirelessly and this won't change.
- My Dell computer doesn't have BIOS setting to turn on Wake on LAN, but in Device Manager the network cards (one intel one and one "controller" one) both offered this ability and were preselected as "on"/"enabled"
- Do I need to change the router settings to open some ports to allow "magic packets" through"? Can this work while I am elsewhere?
As usual, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, so any help here is appreciated. This must be possible in these uber days.
